Abe Koogler’s The Fulfillment Centre opened last night in a production directed by Ted Dykstra.  It’s the story of four people in a small town dependent on some sort of giant fulfillment centre; an all too common fate for small town America.  In a post-industrial USA it’s that or a prison.

Coming up in November

Here’s what’s coming up next month as best I know.

  • Canadian Stage’s presentation of Robert Lepage’s The Far Side of the Moon opens at the Bluma Appel Theatre on November 1st and runs until the 16th.
  • In the RBA lunchtime series we have the Wirth Vocal Prize winner in recital on the 6th
  • Branden Jacob-Jenkins’ The Comeuppance is playing at Soulpepper.  Previews are October 30th to November 5th with opening night on the 6th and the run continuing to November 23rd.

Still waiting for Godot

It’s been 73 years since the first performance of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot and Vladimir and Estragon are still waiting.  The play though has become an established  icon of experimental 20th century theatre and millions of words have been written about it.  It’s currently running at Coal Mine Theatre in a production directed by Kelli Fox.  As far as I remember (and it’s been fifty years since I read the play) this production plays it straight and pretty much entirely according to the stage directions in the script.  The set is a tree and a bunch of dirt.  Nobody sits in a dust bin.  So everything turns on subtlety and timing which is quite a challenge.

Falling into September

Life slowly returns to some version of normal.. Here’s what I’m seeing so far for Sptember.

  • 5th September – Apocryphonia have a PWYC concert at St. Thomas’ Huron Street featuring music from the Hundred Years War.
  • 11th September – Lucy Kirkwood’s The Welkin opens at Soulpepper.  Previews are the 4th to the 10th with the  run extending to October 5th.

Leaving Home

Leaving Home is a 1972 play by David French set in Toronto in the 1950s and centring on a Newfoundland family that migrated to Toronto at the end of the war.  It originally played at Tarragon Theatre and it’s now playing at Coal Mine Theatre in a production by Halifax’ Matchstick Theatre.

Looking ahead to June

Things slow down just a little bit in June but with both Luminato and Opera 5’s Opera festival it’s not that quiet.  Here’s what’s coming down:

  • June 5th to 7th at Daniels Spectrum there’s Nigamon/Tunai; an exploration of Indigenous perspectives from North and South America (part of Luminato)
  • June 6th at Metropolitan United Krisztina Szabó leads in Queen of the Night Communion, another Luminato show.

Don’t look down

Duncan Macmillan’s play People, Places and Things opened last night at Coal Mine Theatre.  It premiered in London in 2015 and has now been adapted to relocate the setting to Toronto and to customize the movement elements to the small, intimate space at Coal Mine.  It’s a play about addiction, addiction treatment, theatre and how we construct and cope with “reality” (whatever that is).  It’s long, intense, disturbing and, ultimately, very thought provoking.

February 2025

Before looking forward to next month I want to mention a couple of things this weekend that I haven’t previously noticed.  Saturday (Jan 25th) at 12.30pm there is a Met HD broadcast of new production of Aida with a pretty interesting looking cast.  Later, at 6pm there’s a rather special concert at the Arts and letters Club to celebrate the 100th birthday of Morry Kernerman (former assistant concertmaster of both the TSO and OSM).  The concert is presented by Canzona Chamber Players and wiull feature Trio Uchida-Crozman-Chiu. The Case for the Existence of God

Samuel D. Hunter’s play The Case for the Existence of God, in a production directed by Ted Dykstra, opened at Coal Mine Theatre on Thursday night.  It’s a story about the somewhat unlikely friendship between two would be single fathers in a small town in Idaho.  It’s mostly pretty sad but with some really funny moments.  We can come back to the God thing.

Infinite Life

Infinite Life, by Annie Baker, in a production directed by Jackie Maxwell, opened at Coal Mine Theatre last night.  It’s a play that has garnered acclaim in both London and New York.  It’s not hard to see why.  It’s the sort of play that perhaps appeals to theatre people (including critics) more than it does to the general public, though it’s not without wider appeal.  It requires great skill and precision to bring off precisely because nothing really happens.  There’s no narrative thread for a general audience to grasp.  That said it is remarkably effective on its own terms.
