The season starts to ramp up a bit…

Concerts and Opera

  • September 1st at Lula Lounge, Louisa Lyne & di Yiddishe Kapelye, present Leonard Cohen in Yiddish as part of the Ashkenaz Festival.
  • September 18th is the opening of Verdi’s La Traviata at the Four Seasons Centre. There are ten performances split between two casts with the last on October 17th.
  • September 23rd sees the Ensemble Studio open the Free Concert Series in the RBA. Note these shows are still free but are now ticketed.
  • September 30th is National Truth and Reconciliation Day and the COC has a lunchtime lecture/recital in the RBA by mezzo Camryn Dewar on The Evolution of Female Indigenous Representation in Canadian Opera from 1879 to Present.

Medusa intrigues but doesn’t entirely convince

Medusa, by Erin Shields, opened on Wednesday night at Soulpepper. It’s a really interesting piece brimming with ideas but I wasn’t completely convinced it worked. If I’d seen it at a workshop my reaction would have been very positive but also a feeling that there was still work to do. I wish I was smart enough to know what that might be!

Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary is an interesting concept that doesn’t really come off

Erin Shields’ Mary, Mary, Mary, Mary is currently playing at Crow’s theatre in a production directed by Ellen McDougall.  It aims to shed new light on the Gospel stories by seeing them through the eyes of four Mary’s; the mother of Jesus (Michelle Monteith), Mary Magdalene (Sabryn Rock), Lazarus’ sister (Belinda Corpuz) and the mother of James and Joseph (Nancy Palk).  It doesn’t really provide much illumination.

It’s my decision

Erin Shields You, Always opened at the Berkeley Street Theatre on Wednesday night in a production directed by Andrea Donaldson.  It’s the story of the rlationship between two sisters.  The elder, Liz (Maev Beaty), is a high achiever; solid academics, law school, husband and two children.  The younger, Delia (Liisa Repo-Moretell), is a college dropout, singer songwriter and a vigorously promiscuous Lesbian (or maybe bisexual) even though there’s only one orgy in Brazil.  In spite of, or because of their differences they are very close.
