Angel’s Bone

Angel’s Bone; music by Du Yun, libretto by Royce Vavrek, is an interesting concept.  It deals with human trafficking through the medium of two angels who fall to earth and find themselves in the hands of a couple; one of them a formerly trafficked person, who exploit them for sexual/commercial purposes.  It’s dramatically quite effective, well constructed and the libretto has a certain poetry to it.  It played at Harbourfront Theatre this last weekend in a co-pro by Sound the Alarm Music Theatre, Loose Tea Music Theatre and Array Music.

Canoe

Canoe; libretto by Spy Dénommé-Welch, music by the librettist and Catherine Magowan, had its world premier at Trinity St. Paul’s on Friday evening.  It’s a complex work and adopts some interesting approaches to telling an Indigenous story within the conventions of European opera.  It’s effectively directed, on quite a minimal but functional set (Lindy Kinoshameg), by Dénommé-Spy and Moynan King.

Les shorts qui chantent

Tapestry Briefs: Les shorts qui chantent opened last night at the Alliance Française.  It’s a twist on the traditional Tapestry Briefs show.  This time it’s bilingual with the twelve sketches emanating from a bilingual LibLab held in Toronto in conjunction with Opéra de Montréal and Musique Trois Femmes.  The short scenes are directed by Tim Albery and make really interesting use of video projections in the very Intimate theatre at the AF.

Collaborations

Yesterday’s concert in the RBA was the annual collaboration between members of the COC Ensemble Studio and members of the Atelier Lyrique de l’Opéra de Montréal.  Danika Lorèn, Emily D’Angelo and Stéphane Mayer represented the COC with Baritone Geoffroy Salvas, tenor Keven Geddes, mezzo Caroline Gélinas and pianist Carol-Anne Fraser up for the visitors.  It was very much a program of “opera pops” but the quality of the performances was consistently more than decent and it made for a fun hour.
