Iron Chef d’Orchestre

The second Tapestry show this week which played Wednesday night at Theatre Passe Muraille was Jennifer Tung’s Iron Chef d’Orchestre.  Knowing Jennifer’s kitchen prowess I expected this to be at least as food inspired as the previous night’s Le Kitchen Party but it wasn’t.

What Brings You In

12 - Leslie Ting — What Brings You In smallWhat Brings You In is an album of music for violin and electronics that consists mostly of work that was composed for performance as part of an art installation or a site specific performance or as therapy rather than a conventional concert hall experience.  It features violinist Leslie Ting and various collaborators on percussion and live electronics.  It’s one of the most “experimental” records I’ve listened to.  There are five tracks and I’m going to describe each piece as best I can.  Conventional music vocabulary; melody, harmony, rhythm etc isn’t much help! Describe Yourself

describeyourselfThere’s a story behind violinist Christopher Whitley’s new solo album Describe Yourself.  Entering the 2017 Canada Council for the Arts. Musical Instrument Bank Competition, he found himself required to offer a Canadian composition.  The chosen piece was Jeffrey Ryan’s Bellatrix.  He was successful and so this album is played on a 1700 Taft Stradivarius and it opens with the aforesaid Bellatrix.
