A special shout out

Don Giovanni!

I wanted to give a shout out to a one off performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni coming up later this month as it’s in support of a good cause; the Redwood Women’s Shelter.  Appropriately the show is at the Redwood Theatre on Gerrard East (an interesting space with an excellent bar if you haven’t been there before.)  It’s on May 22nd at 8pm with a talk by Michael Jones of Opera Canada at 7.15pm.

It’s piano accompaniment (Brahm Goldhammer) and I suspect it’s basically arias with narration format but it’s an excellent cast headed up by Alex Hajek as the Don.  Tickets start at $50 and are available at:
https://www.theredwoodtheatre.com/event-details/don-giovanni
And there’s early bird discount code DG2026 for 20% off tickets.

The full details including casting are in the linked document

Canuck Cantatas

Canuck Cantatas is the first live show from Against the Grain Theatre since, I think, 2023.  It’s good to see what was once a staple of the Toronto indy scene in action again.  This show is three short monodramas.  Each features a soprano singer who is also either composer or librettist and all are based around the story of one, Canadian, character.  The accompanying ensemble consisted of piano (Spencer Kryzanowski), string trio (Julia Mirzoev, Russell Iceberg, Peter Eom) and bass clarinet (Brad Cherwin).  Since the show was at the Redwood everybody was miked and amplified with speakers all around the performance space which was an interesting effect.

Raining, cats and dogs

The Redwood Theatre was packed on a wet Sunday evening for the latest gala from Opera Revue.  This time the theme was circus with guests Kalen Davidson juggling and setting things on fire, Haley Shannon on aerial silks, Ambur Braid doing Ambur things and Walter Bowen Braid jumping through hoops.  The usual gang; Danie Friesen, Alex Hajek and Claire Elise-Harris were of course also clowning it.

A rather different Opera Revue show

82448A99-7CBC-4566-B525-35743D468953-1Opera Revue teamed up with Opera Atelier for a show called Trills, Chills and Thrills at the Redwood Theatre on Sunday evening.  The usual gang of Danie Friesen, Alex Hajek and Claire Harris were joined by tenor Ben Done and mezzo Kathryn Rose Johnston for a programme of opera arias and musical theatre numbers that (sort of) turned the plot of Handel’s Acis and Galatea (OA’s upcoming show) into a murder mystery.

There was music on spooky themes by Britten (Turn of the Screw), Schubert, Handel (of course), Corigliano (Ghosts of Versailles), Lloyd Webber (Phantom, natch), Verdi and more.  It was glued together by a narrative in which the mermaid/nymph Galatea is murdered and despite being turned into sushi her ghost returns to wreak its revenge.  And there was one of the dances from Acis and Galatea (Julia Sedwick and Eric da Silva).
