April preview
Here are some upcoming shows for April:
Music
- First, a late March Show. Yu Dun and Royce Vavrek’s Pulitzer winning opera Angel’s Bone, about human trafficking, comes to Harbourfront Centre Theatre March 22nd to 24th. More information here.
- On the 6th the Happenstancers have a concert; Being Pascal Dusapin, at Redeemer Lutheran. We are promised a “a portrait concert in palindromic form” featuring music by Dusapin, Kaija Saariaho and Samy Moussa.
Late night in Temerty
The late night, “Afterhours”, concert by the GGS New Music Ensemble in the Temerty Theatre is something of a fixture of the 21C festival and it’s almost always fun. Last night was no exception. There were four contrasting pieces conducted and introduced by Brian Current, with his usual gentle erudition on the theme “all music was new music once”. Which is worth thinking about!
The first two pieces on the programme were acoustic, in the sense that no electronics were involved. Tanya León’s Indigena is a kind of high culture homage to salsa. It’s highly textured and brightly toned with variations on Latin dance rhythms and an extended part for solo trumpet. Skilfully composed, very well played and well within the mainstream of contemporary music.
Balance of April and into May
There’s a fair number of shows appearing at fairly short notice as people scramble to adapt to relaxing regulations so this post will contain events for April not previously noted plus a look forward to May.
- April 26th at 7.30 pm Likht Ensemble have a free Holocaust Remembrance Day concert at Mazzoleni Hall.
- April 28th at 8pm at St. Andrews on King St. Soundstreams are reprising the Vivier Lovesongs concert that was done as a stream last fall.
- April 29th at 7.30pm at 918 Bathurst The Happenstancers have a concert featuring music by Julia Wolfe, Nahre Sol, Kaija Saariaho, Gyorgy Kurtag, Oliver Knussen, and WA Mozart.
