What does Hedda seek?

What does Hedda seek?  I think that’s the question at the heart of Liisa Ripo-Martelli’s adaptation of Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler that opened at Coal Mine Theatre on Thursday evening.  It’s not heavily adapted.  It’s still Kristiania in the late 19th century and the environment is as dull, provincial, stuffy and “respectable” as can be.  The language is a little more direct than Ibsen especially in the way men speak to women but still more is left unsaid than not.  Presented with the audience on three sides of the tiny Coal Mine space it’s intimate to the point of, entirely appropriate, claustrophobia.

Migraaaants

Migraaaants is a theatre piece by Matei Visniec translated by Nick Awde and currently playing at Theatre Passe Muraille in a production directed by Siavash Shabanpour.  The programme describes it as a “dark comedy”.  I’m not so sure.  It certainly has absurdist elements and is occasionally funny in a very uncomfortable way but “comedy” I’m not so sure.  Besides, the subject matter; forced migration and people trafficking into and around the EU, is seriously grim.  The “dark” part is on the money.

Sex, death and despair; a Ukrainian tragedy

To Crow’s Theatre on Sunday to see Natal’ya Vorozhbit’s Bad Roads; translated by Sasha Dugdale.  It’s play set during the 2014 Russian invasion of Ukraine.  It’s extremely skillfully and well constructed in six vignettes.  Collectively they explore aspects of the conflict; especially sexual violence and the dehumanising effects that war has on just about everybody caught up in it.

Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo

I guess when events are just too horrible to treat any differently one makes a comedy out of them.  The aftermath of the US led invasion of Iraq certainly fits that category and Rajiv Joseph’s Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo, currently being performed by Modern Times Stage Company at the Streetcar Crowsnest, is as black a comedy as you will likely ever see.  It’s also very difficult to write about without major spoilers.
