judgementalA couple of weeks ago Lydia Perovic of Definitely the Opera, The Globe and Mail and other sundry publications invited myself, Jenna Douglas Simeonov of Schmopera, Joseph So of Ludvig Van and Opera Canada, and Sara Constant of The WholeNote over to her place to record a podcast on our musical/operatic impressions of 2017.  She has summarised it rather nicely here, where you can also listen to it or download it.  It’s an hour and a quarter of controversy and, just maybe, erudition and wit.

OCCoverSpring2013The latest edition of Opera Canada is out and I have an article in it.  This is not exactly my first foray into print but it is the first time I’ve published anything about opera.  (Previous articles have appeared in various political and business journals and the current WIP is aimed at the Journal of Oncology Practice).  Anyway, my piece is a review of a semi-staged performance of Handel’s Orlando.  The real reason to buy the thing though is Lydia Perović’s (She of Definitely the Opera) article on the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra.

Incidental Music – finally read

SONY DSCWhat can one say about a novel that combines opera, the Hungarian uprising, philosophising about urban planning, Toronto, the immigrant experience and lots of steamy lesbian sex?  We can say that it’s an interesting combination and not surprisingly it appeals to someone who loves opera, is an immigrant, has a half Hungarian partner and thinks a lot about what makes cities work.  The lesbian sex doesn’t do a lot for me but at least it’s well written lesbian sex which beats the heck out of a lot of the other kind in novels.

Incidental Music

Incidental Music is the title of a new novel by fellow blogger and podcaster Lydia Perovic of Definitely the Opera.  The blurb and the launch promise a book that ranges from Budapest in 1956 to contemporary Toronto with opera and somewhat tortuous relationships along the way.  I haven’t yet had a chance to read past the first 15 pages yet but those first few pages are totally Lydia and that is a very good thing.  I’ll post a proper review when I have finished reading it.
