A couple of months ago I reviewed Jennifer Nicholls’ film of Sweat by Anna Chatterton and Juliet Palmer. It was the main feature in a double bill that also included an animated short from the Canadian Art Song Project of Cecilia Livingston’s arrangement of Wade Hemsworth’s The Wild Goose performed by Lawrence Wiliford and Steven Philcox with animation by students from OCAD.
Tapestry’s Tap:Ex shows are experimental by design. They combine “classical” music making with something else in the hope that some interesting, and maybe even useful, ideas will emerge for future projects. This year’s show; Tap:Ex Versus in the Great Hall at OCAD, combined piano improvisation with an “art battle”. There were two shows with different pianists. At the early show Morgan-Paige played while Julie Amlin and Enrique Bravo painted.

It’s not much of a secret that I’m a bit fanatical about new opera. This year Tapestry has two really exciting looking premieres in Toronto. Later in the year there’s Brian Current’s Gould’s Wall which, as an ex climber, I just have to see but first, in fact coming up next month, is RUR: A Torrent of Light by Nicholas Billon and Nicole Lizée. It’s about robots and it’s a collaboration with OCAD U who are developing some way cool technology for the show. There’s now loads of really good preview material about the show on Tapestry’s Youtube channel. So I have two suggestions to make:
