- May 2nd. The Artists’ Studio of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company are presenting Judith Weir’s The Black Spider. It’a very rare chance to see a Judith Weir opera in Toronto.
- There are two free shows on the 4th. At noon Opera 5’s interns are performing in the RBA and in the evening it’s AtG’s Opera Pub at the Tranzac.
- On the 5th there’s a sneak preview of Toronto Summer Music in the RBA at noon.
- On the 6th Jane Archibald has a recital at Koerner Hall.
- On the 7th Massenet’s Werther opens at the Four Season’s Centre. It runs until May 23rd.
- There are two shows on May 8th. Mehidau and Gernstein present an eclectic piano programme at Koerner Hall (the last concert of 21C thus year) while Opera Revue present Operamania II out in Parkdale.
- On the 9th in the afternoon at Terminal Theatre, AtG are presenting Stories Don’t Die where we may learn more about what happened with Indians on Vacation.
- Later, in the evening, Soundstreams present their last show of the season at the Jane Mallett Theatre. In Terra Pax is curated by Anna Pidgorna and deals with issues of peace and the Ukraine invasion.
- The week of the 10th sees lots of free recitals; Leandra Dahm in Mazzoleni Hall at 5.30pm on the 10th, Michael Colvin and Alain Coulombe in the RBA at noon on the 11th, Emily Rocha and Duncan Stenhouse the following day; same time, same place and ditto on the 13th Opera 5 will present a preview of their Toronto Opera Festival, On the 14th James Coole-Stevenson is the recitalist at noon at Metropolitan United. Finally, on the 15th at 5.30pm in Mazzoleni Hall you can catch Alyssa Bartholomew. Phew!
- Saturday 16th sees Tapestry and the TSO present a conducting masterclass for the participants in the Women in Musical Leadership programme. That’s at 10am at Roy Thomson Hall (free but tickets required).
- On the 20th at 5.30pm in the RBA there’s a preview of orchestral music from Ian Cusson’s upcoming opera Empire of Wild.
- The Toronto Bach Festival runs over the weekend of the 22nd to 24th. Organ music, concertos, cantatas and more at various venues.
- On the 22nd and 23rd Confluence Concerts are presenting Queens, Divas and Icons at Heliconian Hall.
- On the 24th at noon, Alannah Beauparlant has a recital in Mazzoleni Hall.
- May 25th to June 7th sees a touring production of Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish at the Elgin Theatre.
…and in the theatre (apparently a rather quiet month)
- On the 1st Pleiades Theatre presents Karma at Theatre Passe Muraille. It runs until the 17th.
- On the 7th take rimbaud opens at Buddies in Bad Times in a Howland Company production. Preview on the 6th, runs until the 23rd.
- On May 30th Bowtie Productions open Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitts’ Next to Normal at Aki Studio. Runs to June 6th.
