Here are my top picks for May.

  • The Cunning Linguist opens at Factory Theatre on May 1st.  Previews are April 26th, 27th and 30th and it runs to May 11th.  A young queer Mexican woman, with her sidekick God, decides to move to Toronto…
  • Eugene Onegin in the Robert Carsen production opens May 2nd at the COC.  Runs until May 24th.
  • On May 3rd Confluence has a Teiya Kasahara curated show called Project T: Home Video (this is a change from the originally scheduled May 2nd/3rd show).

  • On May 6th at noon in the RBA Jonathan Crowe is hosting a preview of TSM 2025.
  • May 7th Marion Newman and Soundstreams have a free (but ticketed) show called Ancestral Voices at Hugh’s Room.
  • May 8th is a bit crazy with an Ensemble Studio concert at noon in the RBA and Asitha Tennekoon singing in the WMCT series in Walter Hall at 1.30pm.  Then in the evening Unbridled Theatre Collective are presenting The Threepenny Opera at Video Cabaret.  That runs until May 17th.
  • May 9th Sanctuary Song opens at Tapestry Opera; running until May 25th.
  • May 13th to 17th at Theatre Passe Muraille there’s Taste of Hong Kong which actually appears to include food.
  • May 14th Lauren Fagan is performing in the RBA at noon.
  • May 16th is opening night for Comfort Food at Crow’s Theatre.  Previews are the 13th to the 15th and it runs until June 8th.
  • May 20th it’s Les Adieux time again in the RBA.  This one features Karoline Podolak and Korin Thomas-Smith.
  • May 21st to 31st at Buddies in Bad Times is Genrefuck.  It’s a double bill of two one person shows; Augusto Bitter’s Reina and Julie Phan’s Never Walk Alone.
  • On May 23rd there’s a one off concert performance of Cavalleria Rusticana at the COC.
  • May 27th at noon in the RBA Spencer Britten and Chuanyuan Liu with Jialiang Zhu on piano explore what it is to be Asian and queer in song.
  • May 28th to 31st the TSO are performing Beethoven’s Eroica symphony along with Stewart Goodyear playing his piece Callaloo and some Pärtr.
  • May 30th Canadian Children’s Opera Company are remounting Alice Ho’s The Monkiest King at Harbourfront.  Also on May 31st and June 1st.
  • Also on the 30th, if you are a down town east type person the amazing Jamii Esplanade are holding a fundraiser at their digs on the Esplanade.  Jonelle Sills and Queen Hezumuryango are singing with Timothy Cheung on piano.
