There’s not exactly a flood of events in my calendar for march yet but there are a few.  Running March 1st to 20th at Crow’s Theatre is Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ satirical play Gloria about a Manhattan magazine staff seeking fame and glory as the internet turns the industry upside down.  It’s not an opera but it’s directed by the very talented André Sills which is reason enough for me.

March 9th to 12th the COC are presenting Ian Cusson and Colleen Murphy’s new opera aimed at a young audience Fantasma. It’s being performed at the Canadian Opera Company Theatre on Front Street, features members of the Ensemble Studio and sounds quite dark.  Tickets are $70 for adults or $20 for 15 and under.

March 11th and 12th sees Tapestry Songbook XI in which up and coming singers are mentored by a more experienced colleague leading to a recital of numbers fromTapestry’s back catalogue.  The “grown ups” this time are baritone Jorell Williams and pianist/conductor Jennifer Tung.  It’s in the Ernest Balmer Studio and tickets are PWYC with a $15 suggested minimum.

Then on March 16th and 18th The Glenn Gould School is presenting Handel’s Rinaldo at Koerner Hall.  Ivars Taurins conducts and Tom Diamond directs.  Tickets are $25-$45 from the RCM box office.

OK, it’s not a lot but it’s live and in a theatre….
