And so to September

sept23The new season starts to ramp up in September.  My month will start at Factory Theatre on the 7th with Mary Beath Badian’s The Waltz; a coming of age drama set in Saskatchewan.  That runs until the 17th.  The following night there’s a screening at the Four Seasons Centre of Atom Egoyan’s new film Seven Veils that was created in conjunction with last season’s production of Salome.  A young woman is tasked with remounting her former mentor’s production of Salome.  It stars Amanda Seyfried, Ambur Braid, Michael Schade and Michael Kupfer-Radecky.  It’s a chance to see the film ahead of the official premier at TIFF.  More details and tickets here.

September at Crow’s Theatre features Michael Healey’s The Master Plan; a satire on Toronto’s failure to build a “smart city”.  Chris Abraham directs with a great cast.  Previews are 5th to the 12th with the main run from the 13th to October 1st.  No word on whether there’ll be a follow up on Doug Ford’s success in building a “dumb province”.

From the 12th to 16th at Trinity St. Paul’s there’s an interesting fusion of indigenous story telling and opera.  Canoe has music and text by Spy Dénommé-Welch and Catherine Magowan and tells the story of two Indigenous sisters and their mysterious past.  A cast of four Indigenous singers will be supported by a chamber ensemble on historic instruments.  It’s presented by Unsettled Scores, in collaboration with Native Earth Performing Arts, The Toronto Consort and Theatre Passe Muraille so you can sort of guess at the aesthetic.  Details are here.

The COC has free concerts previewing it’s upcoming season at Harbourfront on the 16th at 7.30pm and the 17th at 1pm and 3pm featuring the COC orchestra and Ensemble Studio singers.  It’s free but ticketed.  The first actual Ensemble Studio concert in the RBA is at noon on the 20th and UoT Opera will play the same space and time slot a week later.

Last, but not least, the COC’s season proper opens at the Four Seasons Centre with Fidelio on the 29th (7 performances closing October 20th).  It’s directed by Matthew Ozawa and conducted by Johannes Debus.  The most interesting casting is probably Clay Hilley as Florestan.  He’s a young American Heldentenor who is making quite a splash in Europe.

Expect an update post as more season news comes in.

      • Yes, I also know Anne. She and Ambur and most of the others have come as featured guests to a course I used to teach called “Frankfurt OperaTalk”.
