But first this month… on April 27th to 29th male soprano Samuel Mariño is appearing with
Tafelmusik in a programme titled Higher Love: Virtuoso Arias.  Details here.

Crow’s Theatre has a couple of shows.  True Crime opens on the 2nd.  It’s a short run.  Preview on the 1st then closes on the 7th.  It’s basically a one man, semi-improvised show about an imprisoned con man.  The Chinese Lady, which runs 5th to 21st (previews 2nd to 4th) in the smaller Studio Theatre tells the story of the first Chinese woman in the USA.  Written by Lloyd Suh and directed by Marjorie Chan it should be interesting.  There’s also Boom X.  Rick Miller plays over a hundred characters to narrate events from 1969 t0 1995.  It runs from the 10th to the 28th.  More details at crowstheatre.com.

May 5th is a busy day.  The COC opens a run of Paul Curran’s production of Puccini’s Tosca.  It’s appearing for the fourth time though, obviously, with a different cast.  My review from 2017 is here.  There are eight performances closing May 27th.  Sinéad Campbell-Wallace and Keri Alkema share the role of the deadly diva with Stefano La Colla as Cavaradossi and Roland Wood as Scarpia.  Also that night Toronto Operetta Theatre start a three performance run of a zarzuela; Tomás Bretón’s La Verbena de la Paloma.  That’s at the St. Lawrence Centre.

Opera Revue goes from strength to strength.  They now have regular slots at the Emmet Ray on the 3rd Sunday of the month and the Granite Brewery on the 4th Sunday.  There’s also a show at The Aviary on the 29th April and another Debauchery at the Dakota on May 31st and June 1st.  Check the Opera Revue website for information on what’s ticketed and what’s walk up plus guest information.  In a similar vein Against the Grain’s Opera Pub is at the Drake on May 1st.

On May 26th and 27th there’s the North American premier of Haydn’s L’anima del filosofo; his take ion the Orpheus myth.  It’s a collaboration between the University of Toronto and McGill and is being staged in the MacMillan Theatre.  Asitha Tennekoon and Lindsay McIntyre lead the cast as the lovers.  Full details are here.  It’s a free event but tickets are required.  See the aforegiven link.

Noon hour free concerts in the RBA include bass Önay Köse on thge 3rd, baritone Roland Wood on the 16th and Jonah Spungin and Vlad Soloviev on the 30th.
