June is kind of quiet but first there’s yet another show to mention for the busy last weekend of May.  David Fallis is conducting his last performances as Music Director of the Toronto Consort.  It’s Monteverdi’s Orfeo and it’s at Trinity St. Pauls at 8pm on the 25th and 26th and 3.30pm on the 27th.  Besides David it features Charles Daniels in the title role, Kevin Skelton as Apollo, Laura Pudwell as Messagiera with Jeanne Lamon on first violin plus Montreal’s premier cornetto and sackbut ensemble La Rose des Vents.

And so to June proper.  There are the Tapestry/Pride events previously mentioned as well as Tables Turned at Luminato running from June 16th to 19th.  It’s a reprise of Tapestry’s show from 2015 with the same cast.

Soundstreams has a double bill at 8pm on June 6th and 7th at Crow’s Theatre.  The works are David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion and the world premiere of James Rolfe’s I Think We Are Angels.  The former is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the latter, scored for four voices and accordion, has a libretto based on the poems of Else Lasker-Schüler, known as “The Queen of Expressionism,” a leading woman poet of the movement of poets and artists centred in Berlin.  The casts include soprano Vania Chan,  Andrea Ludwig, Colin Ainsworth and baritone Stephen Hegedus with Michael Bridge on accordion.  I’m a bit gutted to be missing this.  Details and tickets here.

Opera 5 is doing Rossini’s Barber of Seville on June 13th, 15th and 17th in what will be the first show by them that might reasonably be called “mainstream” as well as Jessica Derventzis’ first as Artistic Director.  There’s a proper orchestra with Evan Mitchell conducting and Stephanie Tritchew heads up a really rather good cast.  It’s at the Factory Theatre mainspace.
