February 2024 – concerts and opera

Contemplating another production of “Carmen”

First a couple of 21C concerts inadvertently omitted from my January listings post.  On the 19th in Koerner Hall there’s Fazil Say and friends (including Beste Kalender) in a programme of mostly Turkish music and in the late show in Temerty Theatre the following night Brian Current presents and conducts a concert titled Indigena.

So to February:

  • Don Giovanni opens at the COC on the 2nd.  The production is by Kasper Holten and first appeared at Covent Garden a decade ago.  There are some ex Ensemble Studio members and other COC regulars in the cast including Gordon Bintner as the Don, Simone McIntosh as Zerlina, Joel Allison as Masetto and David Leigh as the Commendatore.  There are seven performances closing on the 24th.  Cunning Little Vixen continues until the 16th.
  • The Estonian Philharmonic Choir have a concert at St. Paul’s Basilica on the 3rd at 7.30pm.  There’s music by Pärt, Palestrina and Omar Daniel.
  • There are two concerts on the 7th.  At lunchtime in the RBA there’s ane Archibald and in the evening Peter Sellars and the LA Master Chorale are at Koerner Hall.  They are performing a staged version of Heinrich Schütz’ Musikalische Exequien.
  • On the 14th Simone McIntosh is in the spotlight in the RBA at lunchtime.
  • On the 20th; same time, same place, there’s a chance to get a sneak peak at Aportia Chryptych.
  • On the 22nd Tapestry Opera and OCAD are collaborating on a piano and art show.  That’s in the Great Hall at OCAD.
  • Also on the 22nd, with matinees on the 24th and 25th, Toronto City Opera are presenting Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah.  It’s fully staged but piano accompaniment.  That’s at the Al Green Theatre.  It’s nice to see one of the smaller companies doing something other than a top ten opera.
  • And again, on the 24th, the Happenstancers have a concert at Redeemer Lutheran at 7.30pm.
  • On the 28th at noon in the RBA the Canadian Art Song Project is presenting Jonelle Sills, Jorell Williams and Steven Philcox in a programme of music by African Canadian composers including the premiere of The Colour of Joy by Maria Thompson Corley.

I’ll up date on legit theatre in a separate post.
