Here’s some of what January has to offer…
Toronto Operetta Theatre is doing Imre Kalman’s The Czardas Princess over the New Year holiday. It’s st the Jane Mallett Theatre and there are shows on December 30th and January 2nd, 3rd and 4th.
- January 6th sees the first vocal concert in the RBA with a performance by mezzo-soprano Michal Aloni.
- On January 10th Likht Ensemble have a concert of music written in various ghettoes during the Holocaust. That’s at the Leah Posluns Theatre.
- On January 14th there’s another Holocaust remembrance concert at the Jane Mallett Theatre. It’s called Singing Through the Darkness and features Aviva Chernick, Judith Lander, Lenka Lichtenberg and Theresa Tova.
- The same evening Make Banana Cry opens at short run at Buddies in Bad Times. Final performance is on the 17th.
- January 16th sees the Happenstancers in Temerty Theatre as part of 21C.
- The 16th sees the first of three performances of Tapestry’s presentation of Matilde Böcher and Asger Kudahl’s LOL:laughing Out Lonely at the Jackman Performance Centre. Also on the 17th; both afternoon and evening.
- On the afternoon of the 18th UoT Opera have their annual Student Composer Collective show. This year t’s at Berkeley Street.
- On the 19th Soundstreams have a free (but ticketed) show at Hugh’s Room called Transoceanic. Curated by Haotian Yu, it traces intersections between technology and diasporic experience.
- The 21st is opening night for Ibsen’s A Doll’s House adapted by Amy Herzog. That’s a Canadian Stage production at the Bluma Appel Theatre. Previews start on January 17th and the run goes on to February 1st.
- On the 22nd the COC Ensemble Studio perform a Mozart programme in the RBA at noon.
- January 24th sees the opening night for the COC’s revival of Verdi’s Rigoletto which runs until February 14th.
- Also on the 24th there’s an “after hours” concert in the Temerty Theatre as part of 21C. The GGS New Music Ensemble do their usual thing!
- And on the afternoon of the 25th in Mazzoleni Hall, also as part of 21C, there’s an all Golijov programme.
- And to round the month out the GGS Vocal Showcase is on the 31st in Mazzoleni Hall.
It doesn’t stay quiet for long does it?
