Casting has now been announced for The Overcoat: A Musical Tailoring; an opera by Morris Panych and James Rolfe based on Gogol’s short story by way of Panych’s 1990s theatrical version. The opera is a co-production of Vancouver Opera, Tapestry Opera and Canadian Stage and will premiere in Toronto’s Bluma Appel Theatre (March 29th to April 14th) before heading to the Vancouver Playhouse (April 28th to May 12th).
Wearing the coat in the role of Akakiy Akakiyevich will be Toronto baritone, cyclist, dancer and climber Geoff Sirett. Asitha Tennekoon will sing the Manager with Peter McGillivray as Head of Department. Other cast members include Andrea Ludwig (Landlady), Meher Pavri (Secretary), Keith Klassen (Mokiya), Aaron Durand (Sossiya), Giles Tomkins (Khodozat), along with Erica Iris, Caitlin Wood and Magali Simard-Galdés as the Mad Chorus.
I enjoyed the brief excerpt from the piece that I saw at Tapestry Shorts back in 2014 and let’s face we could all use a new comic opera; a genre that seems, sadly, rather out of fashion.
