All the Mozart

dg0743902Deutsche Grammophon have re-released the Mozart M22 recordings in a new edition.  It contains all the operas, singspiels and other bits and pieces mostly recorded at Salzburg in 2006.  The whole thing comes to 33 DVDs recorded in HD and with 5.1 surround sound.  It’s also incredibly cheap. has it listed at C$139.99 including shipping.  Full details are available on the Presto Classical site which is likely a good source for UK buyers but others might want to watch the postage charges on this one!  The set includes some fine productions including Kušej’s Don Giovanni and La clemenza di Tito and Guth’s Le nozze di Figaro.  It’s also still currently the only way of getting hold of Herheim’s notorious Die Entführung aus dem Serail which has been out of the catalogue for ages and still isn’t available separately.  The only drawbacks I can see are that many collectors will already have many of these discs and it’s only available on DVD rather than Blu-ray (but most of these recordings never did make it to Blu-ray).  It would make a great Christmas present for someone starting an opera DVD collection.

  1. Unfortunately this set is recorded in DVD Playback Region 2 – so this will not play on most DVD players sold in the U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada, and Bermuda. Pity.

    • Presto is claiming Region 0. I’m not sure I trust the listing because it also claims the aspect ratio is 1:1.33 which it most definitely is not. The listing has a picture of the back of the box which clearly states Region 0. I’m pretty sure it’s kosher. I suspect of using an old listing as this new edition was only released a week ago.

      • The set is on for only $109.98 US (free shipping for Prime members)! The listing claims it’s Region 0, which I’m inclined to believe. What a great deal! I’d buy it if I didn’t already have the original set. This also has Idomeneo and Cosi directed/designed by Karl-Ernst & Ursel Herrmann, which look a little odd but I think are rather good; and the god-like voice of Richard Croft as Mitridate .
