And the mainstream stuff…

Sometimes I forget the obvious… Here’s what the big kids are doing in April/May.

Opera Atelier are staging Berlioz’s 1859 version of Gluck’s Orphée.  There are six performances from April 9th to April 18th.  Mireille Lebel sings Orpheus, Peggy Kriha Dye sings Eurydice and Meghan Lindsay is Amour.  This will be Tafelmusik’s furthest foray yet into 19th century repertoire.  It’s at the Elgin and Marshall Pynkoski directs.  Not sure who is conducting, presumably David Fallis.

April 17th sees the opening of the COC spring season with Els Comediants production of Rossini’s The Barber of Seville.  Rory Macdonald conducts.  There are twelve performances ending May 22nd.  Joshua Hopkins sings Figaro, Serena Malfi and Cecelia Hall share Rosina, Alek Shrader and Bogdan Mihai split Almaviva.  Full details on dates and casting are here.  On May 15th you can catch the single Ensemble Studio performance with Clarence Frazer as Figaro and Charlotte Burrage as Rosina.

The second COC offering opens May 6th with seven performances between than and May 23rd.  It’s a double bill of Bartok’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle and Schoenberg’s monodrama Erwartung.  John Relyea sings Bluebeard with Ekaterina Gubanova as Judith.  Kristina Szabó sings the Schoenberg.  Johannes Debus conducts.  This is a revival of the Robert Lepage production (that guy who does stuff as well as a the Ring at the Met).

May 21st to 23rd the TSO and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir are doing the Verdi Requiem with Sir Andrew Davis conducting.  The soloists are Amber Wagner, Jamie Barton, Frank Lopardo and Eric Owens.  Roy Thomson Hall of course.
