This Sunday sees the first of the season for Recitals at Rosedale. Entitled A Walk on the Dark Side: Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales, it will feature soprano Leslie Ann Bradley, mezzo soprano Allyson McHardy and baritone Geoff Sirett with pianists Robert Kortgaard and Rachel Andrist. The programme features works by Mahler, Debussy, Symanowski, Weil, Gershwin and more. It’s on November 9th at 2.30 pm at Rosedale Presbyterian Church and tickets are available here.
Voicebox: Opera in Concert has a single performance of De Falla’s La Vida Breve on Sunday, November 30th at 2.30pm. Isabel Bayrakdarian and Ernesto Ramirez lead the cast with José Hernández at the piano. This is a cracking piece and should be a good fit for Bayrakdarian. Also, the fabulous Esmerelda Enrique will be dancing. It’s at the St. Lawrence Centre and tickets are available here.
The TSO’s line up for December includes a couplke of things choral/operatic. The main one is a performance by Turin Royal Theatre (Teatro Regio Torino) of a concert production of Rossini’s final opera, William Tell. Guest conductor Gianandrea Noseda will lead the full Turin Royal Theatre Orchestra and Chorus. The cast includes baritone Dalibor Jenis in the title-role, tenor Enea Scala, and soprano Angela Meade. There is just one performance at Roy Thomson Hall on December 5th at 7pm. Tickets are available here. Later in the month the TSO has it’s traditional Messiah. There are five performances on On December 16th, 17th, 19th, 20th; all at 8pm and the 21st at 3pm. It’s a really good line up of soloists; soprano Jane Archibald (swoon!), mezzo-soprano Allyson McHardy, tenor Lawrence Wiliford and bass-baritone Philippe Sly. Grant Llewellyn conducts. And finally, an intriguing on. StarLite Pyrotechnics is is presenting Opera Luminata. The show features musical performance featuring opera and musical theatre songs, synchronized to a backdrop of indoor fireworks and atmospheric effects. This one runs November 11th-15th at Harbourfront Centre’s Fleck Dance Theatre. Featured music includes The Toreador Song (Carmen), Libiamo (La Traviata), Masquerade (Phantom of the Opera), Belle Nuit (The Tales of Hoffman), You’ll Never Walk Alone (Carousel) and more. I’m not familiar with any of the performances but I’m curious! Tickets are available here.
