April 2023

april2023Here’s what I know about so far for April.

On April 6th at 1.30pm in Walter Hall, Music in the Afternoon is presenting a concert featuring Marion Newman, Melody Courage, Evan Korbut and Gordon Gerrard in a mix of classical song and contemporary works on Indigenous themes including music by Ian Cusson, Bramwell Tovey and Tomson Highway.

Later that day, at 7.30pm at Koerner Hall, Opera Atelier have the first of three performances of Handel’s The Resurrection.  This is the fully staged version of the production that streamed during lockdown.  There are further performances on the 8th at 7.30pm and the 9th at 2.30pm.

On the 12th at noon in the RBA, Lawrence Wiliford and PhoeNX Ensemble are performing Alec Roth’s Songs in Time of War.  This is a reprise of the concert they gave in the Music Garden last August but probably with fewer butterflies.

On the 16th at 7.30pm at Trinity St. Paul’s the Amici Ensemble will be joined by Joyce El-Khoury in a programme that includes Strauss, Ravel and several Middle Eastern composers as well as Lebanese songs.

On the 25th at noon in the RBA mezzos Queen Hezumuryango and Alex Hetherington accompanied by Liz Upchurch have a recital.

And, on the 28th at the Four Seasons Centre at 7.30pm it’s the opening night of Verdi’s Scottish Opera with Quinn Kelsey and Sondra Radvanovsky as the two Scots on the make and, best of all, Speranza Scappucci conducting.  Sir David McVicar directs.

That’s also opening night for NEW by Pamela Mala Sinha at the Berkeley Street Theatre (previews start on the 25th).  It’s a presentation by Necessary Angel Theatre Company in association with Canadian Stage and the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.  NEW explores perceptions of identity through the arrival of a bride-to-be in a Bengali community in a small university town in Canada in the 1970s.
