Toronto Summer music has announced the line up (most of it anyway) for this year’s edition on the theme “Beethoven Unleashed”; it being the 250th and so on. The theme has been interpreted to mean Beethoven; those who influenced him and those he influenced, which really doesn’t exclude anybody!
Opening night will be compered by the CBC’s Tom Allen and will feature vocal music by Mozart (Simone McIntosh and Clarence Frazer) plus Beethoven’s 7 Variations on “Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen”, WoO 46; Liszt’s Totentanz and Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 20. That’s at Koerner Hall on July 9th at 7.30pm.
The big vocal recital is on July 13th at 7.30pm in Walter Hall and features Benjamin Appl and Wolfram Rieger in a Schubert and Beethoven programme including An die ferne Geliebte.
Thursday July 16th at 7.30pm at Koerner sees a hook up with Tapestry to present Chan Ka Nin and Mark Brownell’s Iron Road in concert. It tells the story of Chinese workers who helped to build the Canadian Pacific Railway. Midori Marsh heads the cast and we’ll see the welcome return to Toronto of conductor Jordan de Souza.
I’m particularly intrigued by A Night of Dance which happens on July 28th at 7:30 p.m. at Isabel Bader Theatre. It’s a show by Echo Chamber Toronto who create shows that combine chamber music with other art forms. Music is by the Rosebud Quartet and includes Haydn’s String Quartet No. 64 in D Major, Op. 75, No. 5, Schubert’s Quartettsatz, D.703 and Beethoven’s String Quartet No. 10 in E-flat Major, Op. 74 “Harp”. The dance is choreographed by Alysa Pires and features Evelyn Hart, Tyler Gledhill, Kelly Shaw, Judy Luo, and Christiane Lavigne. Watch this space for more news about Echo Chamber.
The ReGEN series is back with young singers and chamber musicians featuring all afternoon and evening on July 11th, 18th and 25th in Walter Hall.
There’s lots more of course, including a complete cycle of the Beethoven violin sonatas, some Bach, Beethoven meets jazz and a cello concert at Lula Lounge. Complete details and ticket information is at www.torontosummermusic.com.
