Toronto Summer Music Festival 2017

The line up for this year’s Toronto Summer Music Festival, the first with Jonathan Crow as Artistic Director has been announced.  It’s the usual mix of orchestral, chamber, piano and small scale vocal music for the most part.  This being the sesquicentennial year it’s heavy on CanCon and, as in previous years, there are academy programs for both singers and instrumentalists.

The vocal highlights are as follows:

  • On July 18th at 7.30pm in Walter Hall there will be a recital by Soile Isokoski and Martin Katz.  The program features songs by Wol;f, Schumann, Strauss and (of course) Sibelius.  Soile is also giving a public masterclass on July 23rd.
  • There’s “A Night at the Opera” on July 27th at 7.30pm in Koerner Hall.  This one features Julie Nesrallah, Andrew Haji, Danika Lorèn, Gary Relyea, Robert Koortgard and the Met’s new 22 year old Concert Master, Nikki Chooi.
  • There will be Academy Program vocal recitals on July 15th and 22nd both at 1pm in Walter Hall.
  • The final night will be August 4th with another “Last Night of the Proms” effort in Koerner Hall though this time we are promised a Canadian spin.  I’m really not sure about this.  I tried it last year and it was like a sober, polite version of LNotP; plenty of pomp but wrong circumstances.  Anyway it’s at the early hour of 7pm and will be followed at 10,30pm with an encore concert featuring Schubert’s Death and the Maiden in both vocal and string quartet versions.  Emily D’Angelo features in both gigs.
