Seven Veils theatrical release

Atom Egoyan’s 2023 film Seven Veils filmed at the Canadian Opera Company and featuring members of the cast of that season’s run of Strauss’ Salome is getting  a theatrical release on March 7th.  I can’t find exact details on whe and where it’s showing but at least some Cineplex and Landmark cinemas will have it.  I saw it pre-pre-release at the Four Seasons Centre in September 2023.  My thoughts are here.

  1. I watched it at Tiff Lightbox last night, John. It tested my patience at a couple of points and it could use fewer creepy men (so many creeps and shit fathers) but it keeps you interested with all the layers (veils?) of complexity and mess. And I’m a sucker for literary references and Wilde’s Salome plays a huge part in it. Also the main characters (Seyfrid and the prop lady) are flawed in some fascinating ways. Ambur was terrific as the exaggerated version of Ambur and I loved all the lez content of course. Is this the FSC’s first time on film? I believe so. Atom said in an interview that it was super expensive to use the house, but I’m glad they did, it’s a photogenic place. Is it very true to how opera is made? It isn’t. (There are no guru opera directors in the opera world of that kind whose wealthy spouses micromanage their remounts… esp not in order to wreak vengeance on their former lovers). It’s fiction, and good fiction.

    • I kind of expect “creepy” from Egoyan! I’m just happy to see a film that treats opera as something other than an expensive date night. Visconti did it but that’s a long time ago!
