Before heading over to the Daniels Spectrum last night I dropped in on the 2014/15 Royal Conservatory season announcement at Koerner Hall.  The line up of 100 concerts is eclectic; chamber and orchestral, world music and jazz and a small number of vocal concerts which are probably the ones of most interest to readers of this blog.

First up is tenor Marcello Giordani with Bruce Stasyna (piano) and Ashley Thouret (soprano) at Koerner Hall on Saturday 13th December at 8pm. The concert will feature arias and songs by Bellini, Donaudy, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Lehár, Verdi, Tosti, Puccini, and others.

The King’s Singers return to Koerner Hall the following day.  Their concert will include renaissance motets, hymns, carols, cantatas, and songs for Christmas by Lassus, Praetorius, Rutter, Poulenc, and Howells, as well as The King’s Singers’s own Christopher Gabbitas. The evening will conclude with traditional Catalan folk songs and seasonal songs in close harmony.

Perhaps most exciting, acclaimed mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter returns to Koerner Hall with pianist Angela Hewitt, in a program of piano solos and songs by Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Fauré, Chabrier, Debussy, and Cécile Chaminade.  This one is on Friday 9th January at 8pm.

German baritone Christian Gerhaher returns this time with pianist Gerold Huber to perform Franz Schubert’s Winterreise.  This one is on Thursday 26th February at 8pm in Koerner Hall.

The annual Glenn Gould School opera production will be Kurt Weill’s The Threepenny Opera. Yay!  Performances will be Wednesday 18th March and Friday 20th March 2 at 7:30pm in Koerner Hall.

21C will also be back next spring and there’s every chance that that too will feature at least one or two interesting new vocal pieces.
