It’s still mostly festival season with two events coming up in Toronto.
There’s Summer Opera Lyric Theatre It runs July 26th to August 4th and features three operas in piano score with young artist singers. The operas are Puccini’s La Bohème, Handel’s Serse and Mozart’s Idomeneo and the venue is the Alumnae Theatre on Berkeley Street. Full details, tickets etc.
In a similar vein, though out of town, No Strings Theatre with Opera by Request are doing a production of the Magic Flute (German with English dialogue, piano accompaniment) in Loretto (apparently 15 minutes east of Orangeville so not on the TTC). It’s directed by Rob Herriot and there are six performances between August 9th and 18th. There’s also an Opera Pub at granite Brewery on August 14th. Full details.
There’s also Summerworks which features most experimental theatre at a variety of venues. It runs August 1st to 11th. There’s a focus on survival and collaborations with Taiwan this year. I’m intrigued by the following shows: Rougarou, Bimbos in Space, Slug Meal and Versus. Full details here.
There’s also of course Canadian Stage’s annual production in High Park. This year it’s Hamlet and previews have already started, opening night is the 25th and it runs to September 1st. Details here.
