Tapestry’s SOS Sketch Opera Singers does for the staid old world of opera what I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue did for the quiz show. Five of Toronto’s finest artistes, in the guise of the cross-over group; Krossøver, are, in the immortal words of Humphrey Lyttleton, “given silly things to do”.
Think Gaga does Erlkönig or Britney in the style of Vaughan Williams. But that’s not all. There are lonely drinking fountains, evil babies, pyrotechnic Bavarians and much, much more. It gets sad too. I’m sorry but the frozen vegetables meet the soprano’s customary fate.
Proving that not only the fevered brain of concept creator Michael Mori has been affected by the water in the Distillery District are Keith Klassen (of course), Teiya Kasahara, Simone McIntosh, Korin Thomas-Smith and Jennifer Tung aided by a small army of lunatics who are all fully credited at the end of the half hour video. This is billed as “Episode 1”. I’m really looking forward to the next one (although numbering the episode may just be a joke I suppose…). The video is here and the technical quality, as with all Tapestry’s on-line efforts, is really good.
