Bloor Hot Docs, after something of a hiatus, is showing three Royal Opera House productions in December. Here’s the schedule:
Saturday, December 3, 12:00 PM Norma (directed by La Fura dels Baus’ Alex Olle) with Sonya Yoncheva in the title role. It was described as “striking and perverse” by The Guardian. Sonia Ganassi is Adalgisa with Joseph Calleja as Pollione. Antonio Pappano conducts. More info.
Saturday, December 10, 11:00 AM Cosi fan tutte directed by Jan Phillip Gloger, conducted by Semyon Bychkov. With Angela Brower (Dorabella), Corinne Winters (Fiordiligi), Daniel Behle (Ferrando), Alessio Arduini (Guiglielmo) Looks like an updated “theatre in theatre” production. More info.
Friday, December 30, 11:30 AM Les Contes d’Hoffmann in a “sumptuous production” (never sure if that’s a good thing) by John Schlesinger. Vittorio Grigòlo is in the title role, Thomas Hampson does the four villains (He got rave reviews from some of the London critics), Christine Rice is Giulietta, Sonya Yoncheva is Antonia, Sofia Fomina is Olympia withKate Lindsey rounding things out as Nicklausse. Evelino Pidò conducts. More.
Tickets for the general public are $16 (members $12 and down).
Also on December 10th at 1pm you can see the Met’s “Live in HD” broadcast of Kaija Saariaho’s L’Amour de Loin. It’s a new Robert Lepage production with Eric Owens, Susanna Phillips and Tamara Mumford. Susanna Mällki conducts and so we have the rare (unique?) conjunction of a woman composer and a woman conductor. It’s a work I love and probably the one Met show I will go to this season. Check here for participating Canadian cinemas.
Some great and original reporting you have going on here!
