Sundry season announcements

Some organisations hold off on their season announcements later than others!  Two came in today.

tapestryTapestry Opera announced a season that includes:

  • A remount of Rocking Horse Winner at Crow’s Theatre from November 1st to 12th 2023.
  • Songbook XIII at the Redwood Theatre on March 28th 2024.  It’s a lovely, restored theatre with a really good beer selection.  There will be music too.  Keith Klassen and Naomi Woo headline.
  • Juliane Gallant hosts Le Kitchen Party; a celebration of Acadian music and culture and, it says, food.  That’s me in then.  It’s on May 21st 2024 ant TBD.
  • And the following night Jenn Tung hosts Iron Chef d’Orchestre also at TBD.  Also involves food.  I scents a theme here.

opera5Opera 5 are back with some on-line stuff and an actual, for real, return to live performance.

  • The complete Threepenny Submarine gets an on-line free release on Youtube on November 1st. This is a puppet show for all ages that kind of combines Looney Tunes with Britten’s Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra. Sort of.
  • There’s a workshop of Ryan Trew and Rachel Krehm’s new opera Come Closer at McGill on November 19th.
  • And finally there’s a production of Britten’s The Turn of the Screw from June 12th to 15th at Theatre Passe Muraille.  Amanda Smith directs and Evan Mitchell conducts.  The cast includes Asitha Tennekoon (Prologue/Peter Quint), Elizabeth Polese (Governess), Ryan McDonald (Miles), and Thera Barclay (Flora), and Rachel Krehm (Miss Jessel).  Jokes about typecasting have been rigorously suppressed.  But seriously this is great news.  I have/had major concerns about the indie opera scene in Toronto and to see one of the key pre-pandemic players back in the theatre is awesome.
