August is looking less dead than it did a few days ago. Here’s a selection of what’s on. There’s a site specific production of Tennessee William’s Suddenly Last Summer at Sorry Studios. That’s presented by Riot King and runs August 9th to 13th. Hyejin Kwon has a DMA recital at Walter Hall on the 5th at 7.30pm with some interesting singers presenting various songs to texts by Goethe in a staged performance directed by Anna Theodosakis. (Free).
Canadian Stage’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in High Park runs all month on every night except Mondays at 8pm. Shakespeare in the Ruff are presenting Richard 3 in Withrow Park (PWYC) with previews on the 17th and 18th then every night (except Mondays) at 7.30pm to September 3rd.. As usual, it’s a unique spin described as “We find ourselves in the winter of our discontent as a multiversal collision brings two ideologically opposing Richards of Gloucester face to face. Both Richards must learn to work together through this once-in-a-life-time cosmological event to secure the crown.”
There’s also Summer Opera Lyric Theatre which is presenting Don Giovanni, Giulio Cesare and Dialogues des Carmélites in piano score at the Alumnae theatre from 28th July to 6th August. Tickets and schedule
And there’s Summerworks, running from Aug 3rd to 13th at various venues from The Theatre Centre to farmers’ markets. There are performances, labs, installations and more. Close reading of Shakespeare turns a trans man into a dog. A psychedelic lettuce based pop up. Theatre rooted in Indigenous Ceremony. And food. There’s something for everyone.
