There are a couple of concerts at the end of September that I didn’t hear about in time to include in my September listings post. The concerts are being given by the Happenstancers and Slow Rise Music who each represent some of the interesting and different approaches that Toronto’s younger musicians are taking to presenting chamber music.
On the 26th at Lutheran Church of the Redeemer the Happenstancers have a concert called Broken. Vivaldi’s Trio Sonata ‘la folia’ and Kaija Saariaho’s Folia create a framework for exploring “the perceived stateliness of the Baroque compared with the raw ferocity of twenty first century chamber music”. Other pieces on the programme include two world premieres by Toronto composers. More info and tickets here.
On the 27th and 28th, at the Tranzac, Slow Rise Music have a genre-bending production called Collide-O-Scope themed around “collision”. An ensemble of Toronto composer/performers from diverse stylistic backgrounds will present a series of newly created works for an ensemble that is described as “part chamber sextet, part garage band”. I’m linking to my review of their earlier Tranzac concert here be sirens to give a flavour of what Slow Rise are about. Tickets and so on are here.
