Here’s what I’m looking forward to in April:
- April 1st. Ambur Braid is giving a master class at noon in Walter Hall. This is not an April Fool… probably.
- April 3rd. Midori Marsh is appearing at Walter Hall at 1.30pm in a Women’s Musical Club of Toronto concert.
- April 5th. Flamenco flautist Lara Wong is appearing as part of F for Flamenco at Parkdale hall at 8pm.
- April 8th. Duo Oriana; soprano Sinéad White and lutenist Jonathan Stuchbery, are appearing in the RBA at noon with an HIP song recital.
- Later, at 8pm, Masque of the Red Death opens at The Assembly Theatre. It runs to the 12th.
- April 9th. Opera Ateliers production of Charpentier’s David and Jonathan opens at Koerner Hall at 7.30 pm. Further shows on the 10th, 12th and 13th.
- Also on April 9th The Mahabharata opens at Canadian Stage at the Bluma Appel. Part 1 opens on the 9th with a preview on the 8th and runs to April 26th. Part 2 opens on the 11th and runs to the 27th.
- April 12th. Cultureland Opera Collective present Quest at the new Tapestry digs at 877 Yonge.
- April 15th at 5.30 pm Schmaltz and Pepper present Totally Klesmerizing in the RBA (free).
- April 16th, also in the RBA but at noon, Opera 5 offer a preview of Come Closer.
- April 22nd at 7.30pm the GGS New Music Ensemble have a concert in Temerty Theatre.
- April 23rd. Obsidian Theatre’s FLEX opens at Crow’s Theatre. Previews are April 15th to 22nd and the run continues to May 18th.
- April 24th. Nightwood Theatre’s Shedding a Skin opens at Buddies in Bad Times. Previews are April 22nd and 23rd and it runs until May 4th.
- April 25th. The COC’s production of Berg’s Wozzeck opens at the Four Seasons Centre. Yes I’m excited! Runs until May 16th.
- Annoyingly that is the night of a single performance by Voicebox of Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable at Trinity St. Paul’s.
- It’s also opening night for Soundstreams’ presentation of Tim Albery’s Garden of Vanished Pleasures combining poetry by Derejk Jarman with music by Cecilia Livingston and Donna McKevitt. Fortunately one can also catch it on the 26th and 27th. That’s at Canadian Stage Berkeley Street.
Any intel on whatever happened to Cecilia Livingston’s opera about the Franklin expedition that Opera 5, if memory serves, commissioned yonks ago?
I have no idea. If I see Cecilia or Rachel I’ll ask.
